What causes under eye bags and dark circles?

Under Eye Treatment EssexBelieve it or not, eye bags and dark circles are common skin conditions that many of us face as we start to age. The older we get the more our skin becomes fragile and weaker. This is when we begin to see excess skin forming, swelling and dark shadows in the under eye area.

Under eye bags and dark circles are not always a sign of a medical condition, but they can make us feel less attractive or confident in how we look. Understanding what can cause eye bags to appear can help you find the most appropriate form of treatment.

While the ageing process and loss of collagen and elastin play a big factor in under eye bags appearing, there are several other reasons you might see eye bags and tired eyes.

Top reasons for eye bags, dark circles and puffiness under the eyes

Not getting enough sleep

If you do not get an adequate amount of sleep every night, this can lead to a reduction in oxygen in the under eye area. As a result, the blood vessels under your eyes become darker and more visible.

Poor diet and nutrition

Eating a well-balanced diet can keep your skin and body healthy. If you eat too much fatty foods or a high-salt diet, this can lead to fluid retention and swelling under the eyes.

Equally, if you do not drink enough water, your skin will become dehydrated which can cause the orbital bone to become more visible and create dark circles. and bags under the eyes.

Allergies

If you have any type of allergy, specifically nasal allergies which cause congestion, this can add to under eye puffiness and eye bags. It can also cause swollen veins to dilate and darken, which results in dark circles.

Genetics

If your family members have eye bags and a sunken under eye area, the chances are that you too will develop this. People of colour tend to suffer with dark under eye and eye bags. This is the result of the excess melanin they have in their skin. Too much sun exposure can also cause your body to produce more melanin, which can give you dark circles.

Eye bag removal and dark circle treatment in London

When you think of eye bag removal treatment, you may lean towards a surgical procedure. But did you know that there are several non-surgical treatments that can help reduce the appearance of eye bags and give you a brighter under eye area?

At your initial consultation, one of our skin experts will assess your under eye area and skin concerns. From this, they will discuss what treatments will provide you with the best results and create a bespoke treatment plan.

They may include one or a combination of the following treatments:

Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers or tear trough fillers involve injecting a gel-like substance under the eyes. This gel contains hyaluronic acid which helps to hydrate and brighten the skin and improve dark circles.

Dermal filler treatment also plumps and adds volume to sunken eyes. They can also promote collagen production over time, which can lead to stronger and healthier skin.

The results of dermal fillers should last for around 9-12 months. For some, they can last for up to 18 months. We usually advise our patients to book a top-up appointment at the 12-month mark to help maintain their results.

Polynucleotide treatment

The polynucleotide treatment is a newer approach to treating dark circles under the eyes. It uses DNA fragments to bio-stimulate positive changes in the skin.

This treatment also helps to trigger the production of collagen and elastin in the skin. Not only does this have skin tightening benefits, but it also plumps the skin in the under eye area to make it look more refreshed and youthful.

Most people are suitable for polynucleotide treatment, but you should always speak to one of our trained professionals first. You may not be able to have this treatment if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or undergoing IVF.

Wrinkle relaxing injections

We use a wrinkle-relaxing treatment or Botox to help soften fine lines and wrinkles around the eye area. This includes crow’s feet.

They work by temporarily relaxing the facial muscles that we use every time we laugh, smile or frown. By doing this, it smooths away lines and wrinkles to give you a more youthful appearance. These results last around 3-4 months, at which point, you will need to have a top-up treatment.
