What do sunken eyes look like?
Sunken eyes are also known as under eye hollows or tear trough hollows. They present themselves differently for each person, but on the whole, they are characterised by:
- Eyes that look tired or fatigued
- Skin that appears thinner under the eyes
- Dark circles underneath your eyes
- A hollowing under the eyes
What causes sunken eyes and dark circles?
The skin under the eyes is more fragile and delicate. As we grow older our skin begins to lose collagen and fat, which causes skin to look more thin and saggy. As the skin becomes thinner, blood vessels under the eyes become more prominent. This is why dark circles start to form.
Age is one of the most commonly named causes of sunken eyes. But there are a number of other reasons why hollow and dark under eyes begin to appear.
Fatigue
When we overwork ourselves or don’t get enough sleep, our skin and eyes are the first place that shows its effects. A lack of sleep can weaken the muscles around the eyes, cause under-eye swelling from built up fluid and result in dark circles forming. Equally, too much sleep can result in puffy eyes.
Genetics
Sunken eyes and dark circles can be the result of genetics and be passed down by our parents. Genetics can affect the position of our eyes within their sockets causing the under eyes or tear troughs to look more hollow. Our skin can also be pigmented darker, which can make the under eye area look more tired.
Over exposure to the sun
A little sun can do the face and body good, however too much sun can have an adverse effect on our skin. The sun causes our body to produce excess melanin, which darkens our skin. If your skin is naturally darker due to your genetics, over exposure to the sun can cause the skin around the eyes to become darker.
Dehydration
We’re always told to drink more water and it’s for good reason. Staying hydrated supports the normal function of our organs, which includes the skin. Dehydration causes the skin to become less plump, particularly around the eyes where the skin is most fragile. The under eye area can also become darker, discoloured and more hollow.
Eye strain
How much time we spend looking at our TV, mobile or computer screens can have a negative impact on our eyes. If we place strain on our eyes, it can cause the blood vessels beneath the eyes to become enlarged and more visible. This is where dark circles become more prominent. Eye strain can also be linked to dehydration.
Allergies
If you suffer from seasonal allergies such as hay fever, you may be more prone to sunken eyes. When you have an allergic reaction, your body produces a chemical known as histamines as a defence mechanism. This causes symptoms such as itchy eyes, redness and dilated blood vessels, which can result in dark circles and sunken eyes.
How can sunken eyes be treated?
Sunken eyes and dark circles as a result of ageing or genetics can leave you looking old and tired. To reduce the effects of sunken eyes, you’ll need a treatment that helps to restore volume and plump up the skin under your eyes.
If you think your under eye area is starting to look sunken, tired and dull, tear trough fillers [DD1] may be a good option for you. Tear trough fillers, also referred to as dermal fillers, help to give your under eye area a much needed boost of hydration. They also add fullness to your tear troughs, replacing the lost volume, giving you a natural refreshed look.
