What causes tired-looking eyes and dark circles?

Are dark circles caused by a lack of sleep? The answer to this is, yes, they can be. Poor sleep can cause blood vessels under your eyes to dilate, which appear as dark circles.

However, tired looking eyes can also be the result of age. As we get older, the skin around our eyes starts to become more fragile and thin. This is because we lose collagen, which is the protein which helps give our skin its plump and healthy look. As a result, we start to see saggy skin and bags under the eyes.

There are also a number of other reasons why your eyes might look tired. These include:

  •       Stress and fatigue – which causes the release of cortisol which can lead to fluid release and fluid retention around the eyes. This can make them look dark and puffy.
  •     Dehydration – not drinking enough water can dehydrate the delicate skin around your eyes making it look dull and sunken.
  •     Too much sun – can cause excess melanin (the pigment that gives skin its colour) to form, which can gather under the eyes and give them a dark and tired appearance.
  •     Genetics – if your family suffers from dark circles and sunken under eyes, the chances are that you will be likely to suffer from this too.

Tear trough fillers treatment for sunken eyes

At Time Clinic, we use dermal fillers to help reduce dark circles, plump the skin and restore volume in the tear troughs (under the eye).

Not only does tear trough filler treatment provide instant results, but it also helps to encourage collagen production over time. This gives your skin a boost of hydration and also helps to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

How do tear trough fillers work?

Our team uses hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers to provide patients with tear trough treatment. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in your skin. It helps to keep the skin supple and flexible. This is important around the eye area where the skin is more delicate.

Tear trough fillers are a minimally invasive treatment. The procedure involves injecting dermal filler in the under-eye area. To make your treatment as comfortable as possible, we apply a topical numbing cream to the tear trough area.

The treatment takes around 30 minutes to complete and post-treatment, you will start to see more plumpness in the skin beneath your eyes. This will continue to improve over the next few weeks when you will see your dark circles start to fade.

How long do the results of tear trough fillers last?

The results from tear trough correction for sunken eyes last for up to 12 months. This will vary from person to person. The amount of time your filler lasts will depend on factors such as your metabolism and how your skin responds to treatment.

During your consultation, your doctor or practitioner will discuss how much dermal filler you will need and what treatment plan will work for you. This will include when you need a top-up or further treatment to prevent your tired eyes from coming back.
