In the fight against the visible signs of ageing such as lines and wrinkles, we are always looking for the next best treatment to help us turn back the hands of time. This is where
biostimulators are making a splash in the beauty industry. But what are biostimulators and how do they work? We are here to break down the answers and help you see what they can do for you and your skin.
What are biostimulators?
As their name suggests, biostimulators work to stimulate action from within the middle (dermal) layers of the skin. They do much more than your average skin treatment such as dermal fillers, which simply restore volume in the skin. Instead, by injecting biostimulators into the skin, we can help trigger your body’s natural elastin and collagen production.
Why is the production of new collagen and elastin so important? They are both essential proteins that help to keep our skin flexible, firm and supple. In essence, they play a big part in keeping us looking young by reducing the appearance of lines, wrinkles and sagging skin.
Because this treatment works below the surface of your skin, you will continue to see results weeks and months after your treatment ends.
A summary of the key benefits of biostimulators
- Increase the production of new collagen and elastin in the skin
- We can tailor the treatment to your skin type, skin age and skin health
- Boosts hydration in the skin for better skin health and skin quality
- Reduces some of the signs of visible ageing such as sagging skin, and lines and wrinkles
- Can help tighten the skin giving you a more youthful look
- Good to start in your late 20s and early 30s when collagen levels in the skin start to decrease
- You can combine biostimulators with other skin treatments based on your skin’s needs
Why do we need biostimulators?
Ageing is a completely normal part of life, but sometimes our skin can show the visible signs of ageing long before we would expect it to. From dull skin to lines and wrinkles, our skin can make us look and feel older than we actually are.
Changes in our skin can be down to genetics, environmental damage from the sun, diet and hormonal imbalances. As we age, we also start to see levels of hyaluronic acid, collagen and elastin decrease in our skin. This is why our skin starts to sag and look less healthy than before.
By using biostimulator injections, we are encouraging your body to produce new collagen and elastin. This effectively helps to hydrate, firm and tighten your skin. It will also help to reduce skin sagging and skin laxity. How much new collagen your body will produce depends on factors such as your age and the condition of your skin.
How do biostimulators work?
We have mentioned that biostimulators work by rejuvenating our skin from within, but how do they do that? They work by making your body think that it has been hurt. As a result, they trigger your body’s natural healing response. They do this by causing controlled micro-trauma to the skin.
This is not as harsh as it sounds. Put simply, when our body gets hurt or believes that it is hurt, it will begin to produce new collagen and elastin in order to help fix any broken or damaged skin tissue. By doing this, the collagen and elastin production helps to build the strength and firmness of your skin, whilst also giving it a more healthy and youthful appearance.
When we inject biostimulators into the skin, they help to optimise the structure and function of your skin over time. Many aestheticians recommend this treatment as a way to help care for and feed your skin. Whilst the results do not appear right away, they will gradually develop over weeks and months. This means you will see more natural-looking results than other skin treatments such as fillers.
Some patients will choose to have biostimulators and fillers together, although this will not happen in the same treatment appointment. This is an individual choice that will need to be discussed with one of our skin experts based on your skin needs and goals.
What are the different types of biostimulators?
There are two types of biostimulators – hyaluronic acid (HA) based and non-HA based.
Hyaluronic acid-based biostimulators
HArmonyCA
HArmonyCa is a unique bio-stimulator as it acts in two ways. It is a hybrid injectable treatment that includes both hyaluronic acid (HA) and Calcium Hydroxyapatite (CaHA). These ingredients work together to provide an immediate lifting of the skin and boost its hydration.
It also stimulates collagen production over time to strengthen and tighten your skin. This means you will continue to see results months after your treatment.
You will start to see visible results after your first treatment; however, you may need a course of treatment to see the best results. Our doctor will assess your sin during your consultation to build a bespoke treatment plan for you.
Profhilo
Profhilo is another great option for boosting hydration in the skin. It is an injectable treatment that delivers a high dose of hyaluronic acid below the surface of the skin.
This treatment is not the same as dermal fillers will help to add structure and definition to small areas of the face such as the chin and jawline. Profhilo provides a more holistic approach to skin rejuvenation working from within to improve the texture of the skin.
With Profhilo you will see ongoing results. This is because the high concentration of hyaluronic acid encourages the body to continue producing it, which means that loose or sagging skin will become tighter over time. Besides the face, this treatment also works well on the neck, decolletage and hands.
Juvéderm Volite
This is another injectable treatment that focuses on delivering hyaluronic acid to the middle layers of the skin (dermis). This means it can help hydrate thin and dull-looking skin, whilst also improving skin texture.
The treatment involves using a very fine needle to inject in different areas of the face. We do this directly below the top layer of the skin and not deeper as we would do with dermal fillers. By doing this, we are helping to moisturise underneath the surface of the skin where normal moisturisers do not reach.
Juvéderm Volite can also stimulate the body’s own production of collagen to help improve skin quality over time. Most people are suitable for this treatment and there is minimal downtime, so you can go back to work straight away.
Non-hyaluronic acid-based biostimulators
Polynucleotides
The polynucleotide treatment is the latest aesthetic skin treatment that can help boost the health and quality of your skin. This innovative treatment uses the power of DNA building blocks to promote the production of collagen and elastin in the skin. This helps you to build a stronger and thicker skin barrier that looks more radiant and healthy.
This treatment works on a cellular level, which means that it repairs damaged skin tissue and also hydrates the skin. We typically use Polynucleotides to rejuvenate the under eye area and reduce dark circles. However, you can also do this treatment on other areas of the face and neck.
Polynucleotide treatment is a great option to help tackle fine lines and wrinkles, to tighten loose skin and lift the skin. They do not plump the face like dermal fillers do, but they do smooth the face and give it a healthy glow.
