Conditions
Wide Jaw
A heavy set or wide jaw can be attributed to the enlargement of the masseter muscles. These are the muscles which sit over the jaw, and are flexed when the teeth are clenched. Enlarged masseter muscles can be either due to genetics, or frequent clenching of the jaw including involuntary grinding of the teeth at night. This can make the lower part of the face appear wider through the increased muscle mass, and in turn, more masculine.
Where the wide jaw is co-genital (present from birth) and due to bone as opposed to muscle, this cannot be completely successfully treated non invasively – although where there is a combination of muscle and bone causing the appearance of a wide jaw, we are able to enjoy success in a reduction of muscular activity.
At Time Clinic, we approach wide jaw with the use of muscle relaxing injections into the masseters, to relax the muscles and reduce their activity. A result of this muscle relaxation is a reduction in their size and thus a slimmer, more delicate jaw.
