Smokers Lines
Smokers lines, lip lines or lipstick lines are all common names for the condition whereby small vertical lines appear around the lips, typically sitting above the top lip or directly below the bottom lip.
Smokers lines are due to everyday motions of the mouth (particularly repetitive motions, such as talking, and smoking where the mouth is forced to purse to inhale on the cigarette) causing a change in the structure of the lip, along with a natural loss of volume of the lips due to the thinning skin and lost form through ageing.
Smokers lines generally begin to appear in your thirties or forties, although when genetic, they can appear at anytime throughout your life. They are most noticeable in those with thinner lips, and can sometimes give the appearance of one being a little less happy than they are. Smokers lines (or lip lines) are easily treated with the use of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers to add volume to the indentations around the mouth, and in some instances, treatment can prevent recurrence.
