Jowls
A typical characteristic of jowls is the sagging, heavy skin that can appear on or below the jawline, chin and lower cheek. Jowls are primarily caused by a decrease in collagen and elastin in the skin which naturally occurs as we age. This loss of tightness around the jawline allows for the fat deposits in our lower face to begin to hang a little through the effects of gravity.
As well as genetics, our unique facial bone structure and lifestyle can all contribute to the development of this condition. If approached early in their development, jowls can be very successfully treated, and further development controlled through environmental and lifestyle changes to help manage the progression of the condition.
More advanced jowls can be treated with dermal fillers to restore volume and help give a lifted tighter look, and can also be combined with wrinkle relaxing injections to help relax the muscles in the neck which pull along the jawline.
