The Real Reason You Keep Avoiding Shorts. Let’s Talk About Thread Veins

Share page:

Let’s be honest, how many times have you stood in front of your wardrobe, reached for a favourite dress or your best pair of shorts, and then hesitated? Maybe you swapped them for trousers instead. Maybe you told yourself you’d wear them “once the weather’s a bit less sunny.”

If that sounds familiar, you’re far from alone! Those fine, red, web-like lines creeping across your ankles or rippling behind your knees have a name, a cause, and, good news, a solution.

What Exactly Are Thread Veins?

You might know them as thread veins, spider veins, or those “little red squiggles that seem to have appeared out of nowhere.” Whatever you call them, they’re completely harmless from a medical standpoint. But that doesn’t make them any less frustrating when they start influencing what you wear, how you sit, and how confident you feel in your own skin.

It usually starts small. One thin, branching line near the ankle. Then another behind the knee. Before long, they’ve spread like tiny waves across your legs. And next, you’ve quietly changed your relationship with shorts, skirts, and swimwear without even realising it.

Why Do They Show Up in the First Place?

In a simple way, think of your circulatory system as a vast network of one-way streets. Your veins are lined with tiny built-in valves that act like microscopic gates, working hard to push blood back up toward your heart against gravity.

Over time, though, those valves can weaken, or come under more pressure than they’re built for. When a valve struggles, blood pools slightly at that point, causing the tiny capillaries near your skin’s surface to stretch and expand. And because skin naturally thins as we age, those widened, blood-filled vessels become visible, hence the thread veins you see staring back at you in the mirror.

A few common triggers include prolonged standing or sitting, which places extra pressure on the valves in your legs, especially if your job keeps you on your feet (or in a chair) for long stretches. Hormonal fluctuations play a role, too. Oestrogen can relax vein walls, making them more prone to stretching, which is part of why thread veins are so common after pregnancy or during menopause. And then there’s genetics and lifestyle: if your mum or dad dealt with them, there’s a good chance your vein walls are naturally a little more delicate too.

The reassuring part? None of this is your fault, and none of it means something is wrong with you. It’s simply how veins can behave over time — and it’s very treatable.

Laser Vein Removal: Best for Fine, Superficial Red Veins

If your thread veins are fine, bright red, and sitting close to the surface, laser is usually the ideal match.

This treatment uses targeted wavelengths of light to seek out and eliminate veins from the outside — no needles involved. The laser targets the red pigment in the blood; as it passes over the skin, it gently heats the vessel until it collapses and seals shut. Your body then naturally absorbs the collapsed vessel over the following weeks.

Because it’s completely needle-free and highly precise, it’s especially well-suited to widespread surface webbing and more delicate areas.

Advanced Sclerotherapy: Best for Deeper, Purple Clusters

If your veins are a little larger, sit deeper, or have that characteristic blue-purple hue, sclerotherapy is often the more effective choice — and it’s widely considered the gold standard for leg veins.

Using an incredibly fine micro-needle, a specialised medical solution is injected directly into the vein. This gently irritates the vein walls, causing them to stick together and close. Because it works from inside the vessel, it’s particularly effective at treating the larger “feeding” veins that a surface laser simply can’t reach.

You Don’t Have to Keep Working Around Them

You shouldn’t have to plan your outfits, your holidays, or your confidence around your veins. Whether it’s a fine red web near your ankle or a deeper purple cluster behind your knee, there’s a treatment path built for exactly what you’re dealing with.

Let’s take a proper look at your legs together and map out the treatment that’s right for you.

From the moment I booked my appointment right through to having a treatment I have been impressed with the professionalism of the Time Clinic, everyone I have encountered is friendly and welcoming. I initially booked a skin consultation and I was fascinated by the results and the way Dr Victoria talked through my results with me. There was no pressure to book any treatments following this but after receiving all the information via email from my consultation I decided there were a few things I wanted to pursue. I was quite nervous before my treatment but Dr Victoria really made me feel at ease. Its early days but so far I am impressed with the results and will definitely return. I feel in safe hands with The Time Clinic.
